I had this concept for a while but left it pretty late to try and execute it. The birds only vist us early morning and late evening so I was waiting for a moment where I could shoot the scene through a bird cage. I was after one of the big parrots or rosellas, but due to my day job, I never had the chance….
so… I had to use a shot I captured the week before and build an elaborate rig .. suspending a piece of cage half way between the enlarger lens and the print paper using pieces of masking tape, and aligning so the bird was visible. I was trying to make it look like a pet bird looking out through the cage and window at a wild bird freely going about his day, however because I had to use a shot I already had, the focal length is all wrong.
I ran off a few versions and this one I thought I stuffed so I switched the light on early with the print still in the stop bath, and the developer was still active.
this caused a yellow tinge from the light, and a brown /red tinge from the reflection of the red stop bath tray. :/ I kinda like how messy it looks so decided to enter this version anyhow.

Wild Bird / Captive Bird…

Ive had many pet birds in my life but now I enjoy having wild birds visit daily. This is our wild bird feeder shot on 35mm Ilford Delta 3200 w/ my 1978 Canon AE-1. I ran the negative with a piece of bird cage suspended half way between the enlarger lens & the photo paper to give a sense of DOF. Then exposed the shot as normal to give the effect of a captive birds view of this little one enjoying the freedom outdoors. Odd colour is due to lights being turned on to early whilst still in the stop bath solution.
